That is not true on a 1967 Camaro with floor shift automatic. The hole in the hump is the same one used for both automatics and standard shift. No extra cutting is involved and putting in a 4 speed is a direct swap. The same crossmember is also used. The driveshaft can be used as well.

Putting in a T350 is also a direct swap and uses the same crossmember. You can even use the same shifter with the T350. Just needs an extra notch added to the detent bracket.

I would leave it alone because of the originality.
