Is it possible to somehow identify the engine numbers on a decked block?

I thought I read or saw a program on using some form of acid on a decked block to "pull" the numbers out of a decked block. Anyone know or have done it before?

a google pulls this up and it comes up many times and is discussed..and is mentioned discussed on NCRS more than a few times

Fry's Reagent this is what some police type csi use you, rub it on the ground off area with a cloth and often a shadow of the numbers would appear that was readable. once a deck is struck/stamped it moved the molecules up to .125 deep is what my old school machinist says....if it was a light strike maybe 1/2 of that..maybe... pipe dream..if the stamp aint there nothing you can do to make it there...it may be a piece of mind for you, but value wise, its still a stamped deck thats been modified and that raises all kinds of suspicion

I saw it done once using a magnaflux station. The stamp was faint, but it was showed up in the photo he took.

It might be worth a try, if you have someone local. Also, I always heard the acid test was a one shot try. Hope this helps. |

Crime labs can sometimes pull serial numbers from objects that have had the numbers ground on, defaced, etc. The technology is there -- cost may be prohibitive. Again as indicated above -- there are various methods ... good luck! TAZ

I have seen this on the forensic shows when a serial number on a gun has been ground off. The numbers lit up like a Christmas tree!
