'69 Z steering box
Guys, I am looking for a manual steering box for my '69 Z/28 which has a 4th week of January build date. Anybody willing to part with one? Tex Timberlake

Re: '69 Z steering box
Type in the casting number and do a search on ebay. That box was used on many different cars, including a lot of ramblers. I have seen them for $10. Only part hard to find is the correct pitman arm.

Re: '69 Z steering box
Mike, yes it was a "quick ratio" steering box. All '69 Zs with manual steering used the same box; unlike '67 and '68, it was not an option in '69. Thanks. Tex

Re: '69 Z steering box
Pretty sure the internals are the same. 4 turns lock to lock. GM just put a longer pitman arm on it and called it close ratio.
Personally I have never driven a first gen manual steering car that felt "right" to me. I have the original box for my car (27,000 miles) but won't likely ever put it back on, because they drive 10 times better with power steering, which is only 3 turns lock to lock. Just my opinion. Lynn |
