My Chevelle has the same two piece ball Denis. The "Chrome" section should actually act as the STOPPER for the top section, at least it does for mine. I have to adjust the two every so often is all. Don't know what else I can say, maybe the threads on your chrome part are just worn too much

I use to stuff a small amt of paper up into the ball of my Hurst Auto/Stick to take up the slack to line up the shift pattern............

Or you can put a thin nut on the bottom before you install the ball. That lets you set the ball in the right place and then tighten the nut to keep it in place
