With the clearance set at .024" .028" you get .496" on the intake and .492" on the exhaust. Over the years GM opened up the clearance specs from .020" .024" to the later .024" .028" This affected the power characteristics of the engine especially the bottom end torque output. Tight clearances would help in launching on poor traction tires.
