Looks like a marine piece. A buddy of mine had an old cabin cruiser with a 283 chevy engine that had similar heavy duty hardware. It also had a cast iron oil pan that weighed 80 pounds.

APC??
Armoured Personel Carrier?? Had a buddy in the motor pool in Germany that said he was putting all aluminum small blocks in military stuff back in the 60's. He identified a small 4-barrel aluminum intake that looked like it was off a 57 283 but had 1/8" pipe fittings in 4 of the intake passages as being a military pieces. ![]()

John, the APC-guess is so close that I have to give you credit for it. Even if this particular engine wasn´t used in an APC, I assume it could have been.
When I bought the engine at a military surplus-centre, the manager told me it had been used as a starter for a diesel-engine in a tank. ![]() I was especially happy because of the brand-new -67 302 crank and the very rare aluminum waterpump. It also had an odd bolt-on extension for the fuelpump that moved the pump out/down 1 to 2 inches. The Holley-carb in this pic has the bowl on top of it. It´s a Holley CENTRI-VAC Governor, list # 2094-1 ![]()

Yep, thats exactly the intake I was talking about. The military may have used those engines for more than one application I guess. Everything I heard was second hand about them being in APC's, but that was the intake I had. I still see them every once in a while.
