Joe,ever try a 990A on the Camaro? I want to,but haven't had the chance.I run a MSD 6A with an tach adapter and the MSD dist and use a 960 SW with no problems.I want to install one of my 970's....

You could do like my buddies in HS did... stand on the cowl and swing a sledgehammer against the firewall until an HEI cap fits "nicely".

Steve,
No, never tried, but i know I have a couple 990A's around here. To be honest, I still think its the tach itself, but i made a bracket that fits behind the plastic dash cluster to keep the weight of the tach from eventually cracking the housing, and it makes changing the tach nearly impossible without removing the entire cluster from the car... which is a bummer, because i now have about a dozen other tachs i could try if i could just easily remove the one that's on there lookin' pretty but not doing anything. ![]()

The MSD unit works well.I run a Delco cap,309R,I think.....It looks like the factory dist.It uses a two wire hook up that can be easily hidden. The rest of my MSD crap is hidden inside my front fender behind the battery.Overlooked by almost every judge.........

I would suggest you give a call to TACHMAN ...he rebuilds and converts these tachs and would know the correct way to make them work with a non point system... http://www.tachman.com/

I think I will just keep the original style points since I still have the original distributor with the correct date code on it. My original Dixco hood tachometer still works also so it's probably best to let things stay the way they were designed to be. Let me know if anyone has any luck getting their tachometer to work on one of the new systems and what you had to do to get it to work.

Just keep an extra set of points and a book of matches in the glove and you'll never get stuck !

I've got the Pertronix set-up in one of my cars and the stock Knee Knocker Tach works fine.......I wouldn't do this again as the Pertronix unit has a certain Lag time in the car starting......it seems to take about 5 seconds for the unit to energize itself...........I've learned to turn the key on and wait ........then start......it's a little thing that becomes annoying......other than that .....No Problems............Yet......

my Dixco hood tach is wired to a "typical" HEI distibutor (engine and trans from a 1991 Z-28) it works great, light and all !
