I agree the original stripe color was probably white. Was there any way to request black stripes without getting a -- paint code? IMHO the orange cars look much better with black stripes. More contrast.

When you take the car apart for the repaint I suspect the original stripe color will be lurking somewhere under the cowl panel, blown over onto the firewall etc. Even the most thorough repaints leave evidence behind, and considering the length of time you've owned this car odds are good it's only been painted once or twice. Disassemble it carefully and take lots of pics. A coat of Hugger Orange and a silver grille will give that Z a fresh new face. Get at it!

The Franklin Mint car also had a black top, so it should have black stripes... the black grill is a different story though...
