...ahhh yes, had two run-ins with those camel spiders while there... woke up one morning with one crawling up the side of my tent just 12 inches above my head. Not a good way to wake up. The next episode was another "side of the tent" sighting, but not as close. We tried to kill the second one but quickly realized why they're such survivors out there in the desert. We knocked it to the ground, then stomped several times on top of it with our combat boots before we could kill it. They have a hard shell and can also run fast!, so stomp on them "good" the first time, or you're toast! They aren't actually spiders, but are in the scorpion family. They won't kill you, but will make you wish you were dead if stung by one. I don't miss those nasty things one bit!

Cheers!

Ken

I got that pic in an email a few weeks ago and here is the text that accompanied it.

Here is some info on spiders.... Oh to be a serviceman in Iraq!!!

This was freaky, I had to forward it. Now I'm really glad I'm not over
there!

They run 10 mph, jump three feet, are a nocturnal spider, so only come out
at night unless they are in shade. When they bite you, you are injected
with Novocaine so you go numb instantly. You don't even know you are bitten
when you are sleeping, so you wake up with part of your leg or arm missing
because it has been gnawing on it all night long.
If you are walking around and you bump something that is casting a shadow
over it, and the sun makes contact with it, you better run. It will
instantly run for your shadow, and scream the whole time it is chasing you.

PS. The one on the bottom is eating the one on the top. These are Spiders
found daily in IRAQ by US troops. Imagine waking up and seeing one of
these in your tent!!

That's still an F-n' big spider! Kind of reminds me of the night my Ex and I left her mothers house and pulled out and started up the road just to see this monstrosity crossing the road in the headlights.. I was only up to about 25mph so I hit the brakes and quickly backed up over it (not with the tires).. and got this thing in the headlights.. We got out and walked around the front to about within 5 feet of this beast as it just kept mozying on across the road about to the center line... I had never seen anything like it in the wild before! My Ex-wife and I stood there jaw-dropped as we watched the biggest, blackest, harriest Trantula Spider we'd ever seen just kept on walking toward me! This thing stood 6" tall and 10" across at least!! After a few "jesus H's" and some cuss words we got back in the truck and I backed up a few feet and attempted to squish it with the tire (but I think I missed it) as I drove on just so it didn't end up in someones back yard and eat their pet or something as it was heading for the neigbhorhood.. Man that was a sight!

The two camel spiders I saw were nearly that big, but rest assured, what they're holding "are" a couple camel spiders. You never forget the sight of those ugly creatures. As for the claims of them screaching when moving, hopping, eating flesh, etc.... all I can tell you is, luckily I never found out first hand. I had another friend have a camel spider creep up on him at night and crawl onto his face while sleeping on the ground next to a flight line at Tallil Airfield in Iraq (former Iraqi air force base). The tickle on his face woke him up, he freaked out and flung it off his cheek, and didn't slept a wink the rest of the night!

All I can say is DAMN,I sure would hate to see one of those things in person! Those things are very UGLY.Sort of reminds me of someone I dated a long time ago!I have an uncle that was a tank commander during WWII,and he was stationed on some large Island that I do not remember,as his story goes they were driving down a makeshift road on the island and had the hatch closed due to snipers.Well he said the tank ran over something rather large and he opened the hatch to look and see and behind the tank he saw the biggest snake he had ever seen crawling off in the jungle. As he said the tank did not hurt the snake at all!My uncle said from that day on he never slept outside of that tank again,no matter how hot it it was he slept inside. He said the snake could have eaten a human easily! I guess I get my fear of snakes from my uncle because I am deathly afraid of snakes! no matter if it is real ,plastic, rubber,or what ever I just don't like them at all.Don't like those camel spiders neither! Our military people have to put up with enough stuff without those spiders and other creatures.God Bless all you Guys and Gals serving and that have served to give us our Freedom!

Bobby
