Default Re: Tracing a car's history

Attempting to find any paperwork for my 68 Van Nuys built Z28, Sacramento DMV told me the following:

1. No info available for cars older then 6 years to the general public.

2. Expired tag numbers mean nothing.

3. Only way to trace older cars is thru court litigatetion involving a laywer or judge. (Example: A contested estate, will or trust)

I had a NC State Trooper run the VIN number for me and he came up with the same thing.

Other states are more liberal with their records. For example, I got complete history on my 82 Z28 from the NC DMV, no questions asked for free.
