How do you verify a legitimate 69 Motion Camaro? Are there any codes, markings, stampings, documentation to indicate such? What 69 Camaro options or configurations were offered by Motion? I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

I DON'T BELIEVE THERE IS ANY ONE THING THAT WILL VALIDATE A MOTION BEING AUTHENTIC EXCEPT RUNNING THE NUMBERS BY JOEL ROSEN (NOT A CHEAP INVESTMENT BUT WORTH IT IF YOU THINK IT IS ORIGINAL). HOWEVER, YOU COULD LOOK FOR CERTAIN OPTIONS THAT MOTION PUT ON THEIR CARS AND THAT WOULD INCLUDE MALLORY
CAPACITIVE IGNITION, HON-O-DRIVE, 3BBL HOLLEY CARB WITH GEAR DRIVE INJECTOR MATED TO A SPECIAL EDELBROCK MANIFOLD, KUSTOM HEADERS WITH CORVETTE SIDE PIPES, DUAL ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS IN THE TRUNK AND MOTION DECALS ON THE WINDOWS, FENDERWALLS AND SHOCKS TO NAME A FEW PLACES. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT. |

For a 69 Motion Camaro, I believe they should all be X-22 or X-66 cars and have started life as a 396-375 HP car. This is a good first step. Next, you need to confirm it was sold by Baldwin Chevrolet. IRONCLAD mentioned a few things to check for, but all Motion cars did not have all of these options. Another tell tale sign is re-welded spring perches. If all of the above check out, then it would be a good investment to attempt to verify the car through Joel Rosen.
Remember Baldwin Chevrolet sold a lot of cars including many 396-375 hp Camaros that were not converted by Motion. I have heard there are only about 10 legit '69 Baldwin Motion Camaros remaining. Maybe you'll get lucky. |

What is the best guess on how many Motions Joel made (in all years) and how many of that number are accounted for?

Speaking of that and without sounding morbid, does anyone know if Joel has taken any steps to insure that this information will be passed to someone else in case of an untimely, God forbid death?

Peter, there's a writeup on the 69 BM Vette on http://www.corvettes-musclecars.com/corvette/69Baldwin; and also bdon's posting of the 72 Motion catalog itemizes the Corvette options: http://www.sonic.net/bbdon/free/mc7242.jpg

I know the Motion cars are rare and very unique, but they were ugly in my opinion. Way overdove and gaudy. I think Yenko built a much nicer overall car..

I think the number of ~ 500 vehicles has been tossed about in the past. This would include all years and models. I would be very surprised if it is really that high as these cars were certainly pricey in their day.
Also, who knows if this estimate included just the new conversion cars from Baldwin Chev. and after '71, Motion Performance, or all cars converted in Motion's shop that could have been modified long after they were purchased new. As far as the number remaining, who knows. It sure isn't many as these cars were primarily built to be raced both on and off the track and led hard lives with few surviving. The other difficulty is Joel Rosen has kept much of the information confidential and to my knowledge has not shared any real specifics to the public. He has done a good job in closely guarding the cars and the authenticating process as well as the trademark of the name. Probably very few fakes out there.
