Whoever reinstalled the cowl tag used ordinary pop rivets rather than the factory style recessed rivets used on GM cars of that era. The factory style rivets are actually still available, however, so their presence does not guarantee that a given tag was factory-installed.

How can we be sure this trim tag was the one that came off the car. Trim tags are generally not removed unless repair is necessary in that area or somethig fishy is going on. Its not like they are trying to hide it though. They did leave it unpainted.

If you have a car dipped, you need to remove the trim tag and VIN tag or the dipping process will destroy them. So, they need to be put back on, it just looks like someone didn't use the correct rivets. CRG has a big enough database to cross reference the VIN to the trim tag to tell if it is in the correct time frame.

Jeff, the car is supposedly legit. They removed the trim tag when painting the firewall and did not have the correct rivets to re-install. The salesman said that it was definitely Burnished Brown when it was new but the owner did not want it that color when restored. That is the story I got...........RatPack............

Without the VIN, I can't compare it to the trim tag, but everything on the tag looks right.
Not to say that I wouldn't check out the car extra close to make sure everything was right.
If you beadblast the firewall, better pull the tag or protect it or it will be ruined.
