Yes.

We had water (for power) and Oak trees (for wood), both of which were conducive to making carriages (and then, motorcars and trucks).

Just to expand on that - it ties back to a fellow named Byron Carter.

Carter was the founder and owner of Cartercar, which was swallowed up by Billy Durant so that he could access the unique CV transmission (a flywheel which rode on a disc; moving the flywheel across the disc changed the ratio and even the direction. GM never used it).

Carter was also, unfortunately, one of the few casualties attributed to the hand crank. Lots of instances of broken wrists, arms and other fractures, but they didn't usually result in death.

Carter was crossing the Belle Isle bridge and encountered a young lady in distress. In attempting to hand start her car the crank kicked back and hit him in the jaw, breaking it. While hospitalized for his jaw he contracted pneumonia and died.

Carter was friends with Henry Leland of Cadillac. Leland was devastated and contacted his friend Charles Kettering commissioning him to create some kind of alternative to the hand crank.

The electric starter was introduced on Cadillac models in 1912.

We always had to hand-crank our Farmall Super C (great tractor). I knew that you could get hurt, Dad made sure we knew that. The tractor never kicked back. Never had an issue cranking brass-age cars either.
When can it be a problem? Is it a backfire issue?

I think if you don't set the spark right it will backfire and kick back.

I had a Farmall A that I could hand crank if I wanted; also my 31 Ford. Didn't have a problem with either of those.

There's been a couple occasions where I wished I had a crank on the front of the Chevelle !
