So, I would like to get educated about this please. What is an external clip?

A buddy had this 6" long yoke (end to end), with no grooves in the u-joint holes. Holes are larger than a small block's u-joint. thanks

The most common slip yolk and even pinion flanges use an external e-clip to hold the U-joint cap in place. 454 Chevelles and many big block GM A-bodies used the injection extruded plastic to hold the caps in place. When replacing those U joints they use an internal c-clip.

Thanks. So I took a look at the one I pictured and I do see the plastic ring on the inside like you describe. So is the one I have a TH-400 BB one? Any way to date it? The 17(8)? maybe?

OK, I see the internal u-joint versions to replace this plastic injected process, thanks
