What a great saga, and write-up. Really enjoyed that!!

....I've driven 1900 miles on a "promise" the seller would still have the '69 chevelle I currently own. Never over 300 for parts....but I love a good road trip.

I’m headed to Tucson next month to pick up another Chevelle. Can’t wait to do another road trip, very tough with three kids but I’m going to cannonball it myself this time.

That's a LONG haul by yourself, Tony. I did it last Feb 2025 and it's 1800 miles one way for me. I took 2 days down and back, with 2 motel nights each way. This year I drove to Naples with 1 night hotel and the backseat of the car for a few hours when I got to Fort Meyers at 2am. Leaving, the timing with dropping my wife off at the air port sucked for stopping at a hotel, so drove the 1800 miles home straight thru...39 hours with the overheating engine issue. Those kind of hauls didn't use to bother me much but at 73 it gets a little tough.

Had some time over the last few day to work on the car. Pictures should be in this order but no promises.

Got the timing all set on the magneto. Played with the buzzbox after finding instructions online. Was straightforward and it’s pretty neat hearing the tone of the buzzer change as the points open. I set it at 16, the mag has a 10 degree timing retard(20 at the crank) built into it. So it should put me at 36 running.

Set up my French military surplus tent I’m bringing with me on my trip in a couple months. Now Marty wants it put up every time I’m outside so he can have a fort in the middle of the yard.

Got the rear all painted and had a helper for installing new parking brake cables before sliding the rear back under the car. Still waiting on the new leaf springs but hopefully they ship soon.


Lastly I took the passenger side door all apart to clean and lube everything, and reseal the entire door. I also evicted the old mouse nest I found inside the door. It’s amazing how much more solid the door feels when the window isn’t rattling around because all the seals are gone.

And lastly. The road captain in his vessel.

Got a few other things done but no pictures. Installed a rear package tray, installed a trunk seal so now the trunk won’t rattle around like crazy when I’m driving it, and I almost have the throttle linkage for the dominators done.

Very cool. I know it is a lot easier to take pics than video, but if you get a chance, I would be interested in seeing the buzz box in action. Never having messed with magnetos (other than old lawn mowers) I have never seen how they work.
