Default 1968 Nova front drum brake question

Doing a complete rebuild on the front drum brakes on my 68 L78 Nova.

There is one piece I can’t figure out what it’s for, and doesn’t come in any rebuild kit that I can find.

Behind the pin and up against the backing plate- there is an approx 1” square piece of sheet metal with the corners bent up- almost like a locking mechanism… although I don’t think can actually “lock” anything. What the heck is it, and what is it for? And I suppose I will need to make one….

It is used to keep the anchor bolt (pin) from backing out or loosening. you can see it's bent over at the 11 and 1 o'clock position.

I figured as much- is it weird that it’s not part of any rebuild kit? I mean you can get every spring, nut, bolt, pin, etc…

Thanks for the quick response.

Correct. You do not get that piece in any kit.

Post Nova Brakes Locking Tab...

Doug...

Just saw this thread...hope you are well.

Did some research and couldn't find any listings for these tabs...

You most likely need to 're-create' using plain sheet metal that is soft enough to allow for bending...but, strong enough to hold the pin nut.

I will look at a few other sources and let you know if I find anything.

Tom

Not worried about making it- absolutely will do so. Just hadn’t seen it before, and wanted to confirm.

Thanks guys.

Don't even need to make one unless you are that concerned with aesthetics. Just bend down the lower right corner instead of upper right.

same on 68 camaro - fnt drum brake - usually try to save them as much as possible, or make a few.
