1964 Porsche 356C Sunroof Coupe Outlaw
Selling on a Bring a Trailer online auction. View the auction here: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1964-porsche-356c-146 This exceptional 1964 Porsche 356 Sunroof Coupe is a “Gentleman's Outlaw”. This masterpiece was hand crafted by renowned Ronald Roland who literally wrote the book “Restored by Hand” – the nuts and bolts of a Porsche 356 restoration. The Porsche 356, Porsche's first production car (1948-1965), was a lightweight, rear-engine sports car known for its simple, curvy design, nimble handling and air-cooled four-cylinder engine. It evolved through Pre-A, A, B and C series with upgrades like disc brakes and more power. It became an iconic symbol of driving purity and style, famously appealing to figures like James Dean and Steve McQueen. As the copy of the Porsche Kardex indicates this example was built in 1964 and shipped to Brumos Porsche located in Jacksonville, Florida. Brumos Porsche was a legendary Jacksonville, Florida based Porsche dealership and a dominant force in North America sports car racing, known for its iconic red, white and blue liveries. The team won major races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 24 Hours of Daytona. This example originally had a Signal Red exterior and black interior. The car was eventually purchased in the late 1990's by William Crookes who lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. At the time of purchase the car was in original condition and in need of a complete restoration. Bill connected with expert Ronald Roland to restore this car to the highest standards. Ron Roland is considered to be one of the first “gurus” of Porsche 356 restoration. He was one of the original members of the Porsche 356 Registry. He began the local 356 Motor Cities Group in the Detroit area in early 1980 and published his “Three Five Six” newsletter. Ron was the chairman of the 356 Registry East Coast Holiday at Ann Arbor in 1982, Meadow Brook in 1988 and Concours Chairman in 1998, again at Meadow Brook. From 1979 to 1988 he wrote the “Nuts and Bolts” hands-on restoration column in the magazine. Ron served 31 years in the Air Force National Guard where he flew a variety of planes including the F-4 Phantom and F-16. In 1999, Ron gave up his restoration business and became a Lutheran minister. At that time Ron had a few cars in his shop that he committed to complete including this 1964 Porsche 356 Sunroof Coupe. Ron was inducted into the Registry Hall of Fame in 2004. In 2010, Ron released his book, “Restored by Hand”. The vision of this restoration between Bill and Ron was to build the most beautiful Porsche 356 with custom appointments. There was no time limit and no budget. As the receipts indicate the restoration started in 2000 and his staff worked on the car when time allowed. The pursuit of perfection took 25 years as it was finally completed in 2025. As time went on Bill's life changed and based on his age he decided to sell the car once it was completed. MS CLASSIC CARS worked with Ronald Roland and purchased the car directly from William Crookes in July 2025. MS CLASSIC CARS took this car to the elite level and invested an additional 25,819.09 in service which is documented with an invoice. January of 2026 is the first time this car has ever been listed for sale. Yes, the driving gloves are included. The exterior of this 1964 Porsche 356 Sunroof Coupe is absolutely stunning with its iconic factory design, gorgeous color combination and custom appointments. During the restoration process the original Signal Red paint was stripped to bare metal. Any of the original sheet metal that required attention was addressed. The body was sculptured to perfection focusing on making it laser straight with excellent gap lines. The original factory hood grab handle was removed and shaved for a smooth appearance. The original factory reverse lights were also removed and shaved for a smooth appearance. The rear quarters were widened a few inches for an aggressive appearance which also allows for larger wheels and tires. The hood, doors and engine cover operate very nicely. The doors open and close far better than when they were new. It was outfitted with custom sport mirrors. It was refinished in 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera Iris Blue Metallic (Code 39V) utilizing Glasurit products. This color features a beautiful deep metallic blue that was part of Porsche's special color program often paired with contrasting interiors. The high show quality paint was recently detailed to a brilliant finish by the team at MS CLASSIC CARS. The front and rear bumper guards were removed and the bumpers were painted Iris Blue Metallic. It was treated to all new glass throughout which includes the rear pop-out glass. The original factory door glass vents were removed and custom one-piece glass was installed for cleaner appearance. Everything on the exterior was restored or replaced such as the glass trim, door trim, wiper arms, antenna, headlight bezels, parking light bezels, bumper trim, door handles, engine lid grilles and tail light bezels. The 15” original factory wheels were made 6” wider and chromed by Bolton's of California. The wheels are mounted to new Pirelli P6000 195HR-15 tires. The team at MS CLASSIC CARS added the new parking light bezels, LED lights, Hella fog lights, engine cover grilles, Porsche SC emblem, rear glass and tires. The interior of this 1964 Porsche 356 Sunroof Coupe is the perfect blend luxury and sporty. The interior color contrasts perfectly with the exterior color. It's a match made in heaven! During the restoration process the engine cabin space with stripped to a bare shell. Everything in the interior was restored or replaced new including new rubber door sills, 3-spoke black steering wheel, dash hardware, door handles, window cranks and pedals. It was treated with a new perforated light colored headliner, sun visors and functioning dome lights. The dash fascia was painted Iris Blue Metallic. The dash houses the black face VDO gauges with chrome trim. The interior upholstery was done by Autos International located in Escondido, California. The dash pad, door panels, front seats and folding rear seats were upholstered in 1978 Porsche 911 “Cork” leather. This high quality leather is soft to the touch and has that genuine leather smell. The door panels have arm rests and map pockets. Some of the custom interior features include LED lights, 8,000 tachometer, quartz clock, USB port, Classico Black Ultima shift knob, Custom Autosound USA 850 stereo with AM/FM and Bluetooth, Kicker 5.25” speakers, modern seat belts, German-weave carpeting and a creamy color rubber floor mat from a 1959/1960 Porsche 356 model. The front trunk compartment was stripped, prepped and refinished in black. It retains its original Manufactures Tag and Chassis Number stamp. The original wiring was gone through and is in very good condition. It's equipped with a new fuel tank, plastic liner cover, battery and full size spare. The team at MS CLASSIC CARS added the new fuel tank, plastic liner, battery and converted it from 6-volt to 12-volt. The engine compartment is highly detailed throughout with many new parts. The engine compartment installation kit was refinished in black for a clean appearance. As the copy of the Porsche Kardex indicates this car is powered by its original factory matching-numbers 1.6L flat-four cylinder engine. The engine was professionally rebuilt by expert Vic Skirmants of 356 Enterprises located in North Branch, Michigan. The engine was modified from a 1600cc to a 1720cc with a big bore kit. It retains the original case and was setup with an Elgin Cam. The engine has two rebuilt Zenith Carburetors with custom mesh Flat-4 air cleaners. It's equipped with a 12-volt system including a Pertronix Ignition and High Torque Starter. All of the parts in the engine area were restored or replaced new. The engine breathes through a custom exhaust system that was recently cerakoted. This engine runs excellent and starts fast even when cold. The engine sounds amazing through the exhaust system with the perfect tone. The engine is coupled to the rebuild 4-speed manual transmission with new clutch. The team at MS CLASSIC CARS added the new clutch, had the exhaust cerakoted and did completed a full service including tuning. The undercarriage is nicely detailed throughout with many new parts. The floors were refinished with a black urethane bed-liner undercoating for durability. Everything was restored or replaced new including the steering system, suspension and 4-wheel disc brake system. The team at MS CLASSIC CARS added a dual master cylinder for improved safety. It's equipped with gold painted calipers and Sachs shocks. This vehicle is titled as a 1965 Porsche which was common with later built 1964 models. Last edited by msclassiccars; Today at 03:22 PM. |

Very cool stance. The slightly widened wheels give it just the right amount of "aggression". That is a lot of time and money to invest to widen by 0.5" over the widest factory wheels. Sharp car!
