I bought a 1970 Chevelle SS Oshawa built basket case several years ago and was planning to get started on it 2 years ago. I dug out the title to get the Canadian Documentation on it and had forgotten I'd already done that and had a note with the title that the vin on the title was wrong. The PO had applied for a new title from abandoned and used 12 letters and digits from the trim tag as the vin. The state just accepted that and issued a valid title with 12 digits, instead of the Federal mandated 13 and none of them met the criteria of the Federal law. So, 2 years ago, I started a process to correct the title and that turned into a nightmare with the employees at the state not being trained to recognize I wasn't trying to change the vin on the title to a different car, but get an incorrect, non-valid sequence of letters and numbers changed to the valid vin tag. A week ago I, finally, talked with a long time employee at a satellite office that understood what I was trying to do and called the main office and explained it, again, and re-sent pictures I have of the car, the trim tag and vin tag. They said they would look into it, again, and contact the DMV lady I was working with on a decision. I never heard from her, so last Thursday I called her and she looked up my record and said a new title was sent to the address on file and it appears it is corrected with the real vin.... now I wait for it to get to the address on file, which is my sister's place, so the new title was sent there and I just talked with her on the phone and had her open the envelope. I now have a clean, clear, valid state title with the actual vin on it........
![]() With the Camaro done to the point of paint, it will go in the back car barn for the winter and the Chevelle will be brought into the surgery room for a full, rotisserie, restoration.

It's nothing special, with an L34 engine, chevyman. I do believe it was customer ordered as it was spec'd with buckets and no console, but has A/C and the gauge package.
The ONLY reason it's worth restoring from a rusted out shell is it's Oshawa certification. I have some pics of when I picked it up and parts I put on it after, but when I get it in the shop next month, I'll document everything better and start a thread with lots of pics... ![]()

Me too, Lynn, but I hadn't ruled out a trip to OK, if MN didn't get their "stuff" together...

Glad to hear it's resolved.
I've had a couple titles corrected in MN and both were very easy, but neither was as complicated of a problem like the entire VIN being wrong. One was a '25 Model T titled as a '24. Correcting was very simple, as showing the serial number on the title being May 1925 production couldn't have been 1924 model year. The other was a '55 Chevy with a "5" in the VIN where the St. Louis plant "S" belonged. Correcting the VIN was pretty easy there as well with pictures of the VIN. Applying for title on Cale's 55 was also pretty simple. We bought that without any title. About $300 and a couple page form filled out got us a clean and clear legal title in my name in 30 days. ![]() |
