Hi folks,

A good friend of mine is planning to sell his 1977 308GTB and offered it to me. I know zero about these cars, hence my post to you more knowledgeable friends who I hope can advise me. The car is gorgeous, was repainted thirty years ago in the factory dark gray and still retains its original red leather interior. It was sold new in British Columbia and imported ten years ago, seems to have never been corroded or rusty. Previous owner spent $15k with a Ferrari specialist having the car sorted - brakes, chassis bushings, tires, etc. The owner before that had the engine gone through. The car has about 44k documented miles. Seems ready to go except the AC no longer blows cold.

Any idea on a ballpark value?

A 77 B in those colors would be a good find. If you can get the vin last 5 digits its easy to research these. 308s are decent DYI cars as well and the Ferrarichat 308 subsection is a good resource for anything you'd need. I've had 4 and really enjoy them. That $15K is easy to do with a specialist, but everything they probably did, you can do yourself for $3000 or less in parts.
If that major service was over 5 years ago, (some say 3) the cam belts need to be done again right away. Hopefully also the exhaust valves were replaced by the PO during the engine work. They have hollow stem sodium filled valves now old enough to be prone to breaking the head off the stem. That's really the only weak point. Replace with SS valves. Otherwise they are very robust engines.
