Never seen one like that.

Casting number on block?
Casting date on block?

It doesn't compare with other April '69 DZ pad stamps. Last 618 casting I am aware of is D119.

Unusual for a block cast May 1st to be assembled April 25th...

Doesn't make sense.

E 1 9 is May 1 of 69 if it is a 618 block. But....

Casting sure looks like 3958818, but I don't think that is a good number.
Closest thing would be 3956618, which was phased out in April 69 in favor of the 3970010 blocks. I suppose there could have been some overlap but.....

The assembly date of 0425 would be April 25. Could not have been assembled BEFORE being cast (May 1)

Here’s the story,
Bill and I setting at the Somernite Cruise yesterday and a guy is really looking over Bill’s 69 Z. Starts asking questions about DZ 302 engines. Says his deceased step father had a DZ engine and other car parts in the basement for 25 plus years and his mom now wants it all gone. He showed us these pics I’m posting and kept talking to us for quite awhile.
Of course when he said DZ Bill and I eyes lit up. We got carb pics and vin pics which we can’t make out. I showed him where the distributor numbers were at and he took Bill’s email address and said he’d send more pics first of week. It has 186 heads with it not on the block. Got piston numbers and appears .30 over.
The X has Bill n I puzzled also, I’m like Lynn block cast looks like 818 but that’s not a good number according to Colvin. It’s probably 618.
I agree with you guy about block cast date not corresponding with assembly date on pad. Colvin explains the possible over lap you guys mentioned.
The engine is in Tennessee and pretty good drive for us but we’re going to try n get more info from him and see what happens. I ask if he’d sell all the stuff in a lot and he said yes.
Thanks for helping us out I appreciate it much. I’ll probably be back with some more pics n questions later this week.

I'm thinkin' it's probably not worth driving to TN to look at, unless it's priced absurdly low (unlikely). Block casting p/n is iffy based solely on those cell phone pics, but the block cast date is pretty clear and makes no sense compared with the stamped assembly date, as others have said here.

Bill n I discussed it last night and decided too many things aren’t lining up for it to be a real DZ motor.
He said he’d get back to us with pics n info on all the stuff they have. I saw several rally wheels in the background of one of the pics so you never know.
I haven’t said anything about another goose chase story! A guy said he bought an old rough 72 Monti Carlo and it has a 69 DZ engine in it. Never know till you look!

Definitely worth following up. If he has any dist, pulleys, exh, smog , etc. It’s all worth $$$.
Good luck !!
