This eye-catching Route 66 Siesta Motel Neon Sign is a great display piece for any space. U.S. Route 66 was one of the original highways in the United States numbered highway system. It was established on November 11th, 1926 with road signs erected the following year. The highway became one of the most famous roads in the United States. It ran from Chicago, IL through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before ending in Santa Monica in Los Angeles County, California covering a total of 2,448 miles. It was recognized in popular culture by both the 1946 hit song “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” and Route 66 television series which aired on CBS from 1960 to 1964. It was also featured in the Disney animated feature film franchise Cars, beginning in 2006. The Rio Siesta Motel started out as Rio Courts Motel in 1947, right off Route 66. It brought in travelers from all over the United States. It was only two years later that it was sold at auction and within ten years it was completely remodeled. By the early 1960's, the name had been changed to Rio Siesta Motel and was bigger and better than its former self. On September 26, 1963 a fire broke out and damaged it extensively. The American Insurance Company and Charles Oliver gave a check of 2,778.51 to Ottie Emmons who was the manager of the establishment at the time. Repairs began shortly after to get the Mother Road Motel back into pristine condition. Eventually, the cost to run the operation outweighed the profit and it closed down in 1987. The original Rio Siesta Motel sign was donated to the Billboard Museum Association in September of 2014. The unique and large neon sign states “Rio Siesta Motel NO YES” accompanied by a man laying against a cactus has become iconic. From the information gathered this new reproduction Route 66 Siesta Motel Neon Sign was completed in 2024. MS CLASSIC CARS purchased in it November of 2024 and December of 2024 is the first time it's been listed for sale.

This custom built neon sign features a green rendering of a cactus along with “Siesta Motel” lettering, “Vacancy” lettering, a napping patron wearing a sombrero and a Route 66 highway sign accented by multi-color neon tubing. Illumination is provided by white, red, yellow, green, blue and pink neon tubing that outlines and accents the cactus and lettering. The “Vacancy” lettering is accented with red neon tube that blinks when the sign is switched on. The neon is hand blown glass tubes. The single sided sign is backed by a metal frame which is made of full commercial grade galvanized steel. It's wired for 120-volt circuitry with a US-style wall plug. The sign measures 49” tall, 18” wide and 7.5” deep. A wooden shipping pallet will accompany the sign. A video of the sign operating is provided in the listing.
