It's amazing how much fine lint and tiny particles of foreign material remain on/in parts even after repeated deep scrubbings, not to mention normal break-in flotsam and jetsam and minuscule slivers of silicone sealant, etc. Run one of those pre-screens and you'll see every bit of it lodged in the screen and damn near nothing in the oil filter itself--other than perhaps moly residue.
