Cool short block! Wish I had it in my garage...

Curiosity question that maybe someone can educate me on??

I was always told that if the rods were stamped with cylinder numbers in any fashion, that the assembly had most likely been disassembled at some point in time. The factory did not stamp the rods and caps during assembly because it did not matter what cylinder they were assigned to for the initial installation. They were assembled one at a time so the caps couldn't get mixed up with a different rod and piston.

Is that a true factory assembly process, or perhaps a wives tale???
