I'm not really a Ford guy but love all muscle cars. Over the weekend I acquired a 70 429 scj Torino. I don't know anything about this car other than a little research last night. I have not run the Marti report yet but will do soon. Anyone know a little about these cars?

I have one of these cars, but a Torino Cobra model. I can tell you a bit about what I know:
- There were two 429 CobraJet (CJ) motors in 1970, and this will be coded as the 5th digit of the VIN. The 'C' code will be for the 429 non-ram-air version, and the 'J' code will be for the 429 Ram-Air version (with desirable shaker scoop). - The "Super" Cobra Jet (SCJ) is more confusing. This option upgraded a lot of features of the CJ motor, but Ford didn't change the engine code. The SCJ was really just an option on the C and J code motors. So you could have an SCJ motor with Ram Air (J) or without (C), meaning the VIN won't reflect this SCJ Option. - The reason why this SCJ is an option is because Ford considered it an Axle Package Option, aka Drag Pack. One easy way to tell if you have a real SCJ is by looking at the Axle code on the door tag. The Drag Pack got you either the V (3.91:1) or W (4.30:1) rear axle. In combination with a C or a J code in the VIN then you know this car is actually a real SCJ if it has one of these two axle codes. - In addition to one of these two rear axles the SCJ/DragPack option also added an oil cooler, solid lifters, a different cam, different intake, different carb, 4 bolt mains, 3/8 fuel line, etc. Really, this SCJ 'option' was an entirely different engine configuration, but I guess since it could be added to either the C or J code 429s they left it as an option. A bit confusing. Here's a site with a lot of detailed info: http://www.torinocobra.com/main1.htm - Wade |

It is a J code vin and previous owner told me it has the staggered shocks with a 3:90 nodular 9 in rear. It does have its original shaker and hood with hood tach but does not have the original motor or trans but gave me the oil filter adapter and cooler and rev limiter for it, its in pieces. The motor and trans he gave me is rebuilt with dual quads on it with a cobra air cleaner but gave me the original intake and carb with it. I did check the # on intake and it denotes SCJ but didn't check the carb however the exhaust manifolds come up as SCJ also. He said he may have accidently sold the original motor. He has had the car in his basement for almost 30 years.

The data plate should show SCJ in 99% of the cases. What does the gear code say? That's your answer in most cases (which would be 3.91, not 3.90, or 4.30).
I would appreciate seeing the Marti when you get it. I saw this car in York this past weekend - similar, yet different (follow linkie): http://www.torinocobra.com/forum/vie...=1&t=34753 EDIT: I see you've stopped by the site already. :-) |

The drivers door had been replaced at some point so the tag is gone. I am going to send for the Marti report soon. Yes I have joined that site but just started posting to figure out which report to get.

Well, its mine now. Might be a story for you to write. A guy walks into my shop that I've never met and says i'm giving you my car on Thursday! Picked it up over the weekend and signed over the title. I still cant answer 100% why but I got it. I'm still in disbelief. I was in such a hurry before he changed his mind I didn't get any pictures of it in his basement. He seemed as if he was in a hurry too. I thought something fishy was going on but don't know what it is if anything but went smooth. Thought things were about to change when his son showed up but he said, "I don't want the car".
