- The L72 was not rated at 435 hp - The L72 was not the same motor as the 427/435 in the Vette - The L72 didn't require COPO channels to be ordered - I believe 546 L72 big cars were built per Chevrolet records - Chevrolet usually built more sticks than automatics with their top motors - I'd be willing to bet most of the L72s were ordered for SS 427 cars over any other big car
