I've never seen a Don Hardy poster with manufacturers names on it. It measures 16" x 11".

Did the duocoil fire the plug 180 deg in rotation from the cylinder on the power stroke (2 plugs being fired)?

Most likely the coil charged up each of the two condensers and they both discharged simultaneously, one to each set of points. The rotor then sends the combined hotter spark to a single plug electrode. Really like the cool can.

I was kinda scratching my head on the rotor with two discharge points too. I remember my Dad ran a 312 with a Paxton in the mid 1960's that he said had twin ignition systems. Turns out it had a Ducoil running 2 coils, which he said seemed to require frequent cap changes due to misfires. In a similar way to the Mallory Double Life, the Ducoil would alternate the points. Since they used 2 coils, it gave them more saturation time. The key was that you had to reconfigure the plug wires. So if you were running an engine with a 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 the new cap configuration would be 1-5-4-2-6-8-7-3. Neither of us knew that off the top of our heads. Needed to to sketch the cap and distributor rotation on paper, so I think it's right. If I find any old pictures of the 312, I'll be sure to post them. |
