Very common issue with Novas...especially if they have the rubber floor covering. They were very prone to water leaks in that area and the moisture would collect under the mat....the wet boots may have contributed...but I would check for water leaks while you are in the process...lower corner of windshield area was common spot...get out the hose!

The color of your floors looks just like our 31k mile 69 granny.

If that is the worst of any rust issues you are doing fine.
