GTO vs. GTO, 1964 "The hook on which we hung the magazine." I feel pretty lucky to have met Dave (as he introduced himself) last May. A legend whose editorials I'd enjoyed for years - he's Hemmingway to pretty much any automotive journalist you might come across - Dave couldn't have been more accommodating with my questions about my car and the road test (occasionally giving Mr. Wangers grief for slipping him a "ringer"!), while kindly sharing an anecdote or two of his own. Recalling his writing, our conversations over the course of that weekend (and a few eavesdropped upon), it's tough not to be left with the sense that Mr. Davis made the most of his turn. Good guy. "...in purely visceral automotive terms, I remember only that the first Mustang I drove caused me to cut my finger on an exposed sheet metal edge in the trunk, while my first ride in a GTO left me with a feeling like losing my virginity, going into combat and tasting my first draft beer all in about seven seconds. I remember that the GTO slammed out of the hole like it was being fired from a catapult, that the tach needle slung itself across the dial like a windshield wiper, that the noise from the three two-throat carburetors on that heavy old 389 cubic inch Pontiac V-8 sounded like some awful doomsday Hoover vacuum God sucking up sinners." - David E. Davis A gifted man. R.I.P.
