I believe the axles were not different from the standard 12 bolt. Just the goodies inside the carrier.

Mike I think they were shorter just like axles used with C clip elminators. Also the org. ones are different then the over the counter. I had a pair of NOS over the counter ones years ago.

If memory serves me right they shorter 1" or more.

There is no difference in production axle shafts for non JL-8 12 bolt axles. BE was the same as any other. A drag racer bud told me that service replacement axle shafts would not last nearly as long as production parts. Those may have used different steel or heat treat.

JL-8 axle shafts were physically different.

Did any of the 12 bolts use a larger lug stud than the standard 7/16" we typically see? I had a set of axles once that had 1/2" studs, but suspect someone did this on their own.

I have seen some over the counter GM shafts that were not as tapered as other shafts and were larger in diameter. I would think that the larger shafts with less taper would be stronger?

Thanks guys. Both of my axles are stamped 2149. Could this be a build date? It's an 02D built car. Thanks again.
