Re: air cleaner for a 1969 L72 427
Factory Chevrolet parts manuals are a good place to start. Try to pick up some from (and I'm speculating here) 1970-75. Those should have most of the part numbers you need inside. You can use the parts manual in conjunction with the assembly manual to figure out most of what you'll need. Keep in mind none (any?) of the numbers will be any good at the local Chevy store, but you can use them to figure out what you'll need.
As far as tracking down old parts catalogs, others here are probably a better resource than me (I must have a half dozen full dog-eared sets and I'm not parting with 'em <g>. Wayne Scraba |

Re: air cleaner for a 1969 L72 427
Go to camaros.net, and search for a 2-3 year old thread by kevinw. There are great pics showing the differences between repop and original Cowl hood air cleaners. Don't know what you are building, but I suspect Yenko clone. Real cowl hood air cleaners are very, very pricey, so you might consider repop. I have a clone, but I have all GM stuff on her. My air cleaner was pricey at the time I got it, but cheap by today's prices.

David, here are a couple of the links you may want to read.

Re: air cleaner for a 1969 L72 427
Wayne, Thanks for the advice. I will look into getting parts manuals.
Unreal, I do have a clone (that is not even close...yet). I am not looking for perfection (for example it is a black 69 and there were no black 69s) but something that is a better tribute car than when I got it. That is where my confusion started since I have seen other tribute cars without the cowl induction air cleaner but with a cowl induction style hood. I was thinking about getting a Ricks Camaro Reproduction shown here: Air Cleaner on Ricks Camaro along with the seal shown here: Seal on Ricks Camaro Is there anything else I would need? Are extensions needed? John, Thanks for the links. I will read these thoroughly. |

Re: air cleaner for a 1969 L72 427
You don't need an extention if you have a big block and a stock aluminum intake. The extentions were only used on Z28's and 350 small block cars.

Re: air cleaner for a 1969 L72 427
John, OK, Thanks! I will pick up air cleaner that Ricks lists as a ZL2 and the seal.
Unreal, Do you have any engine pics? |

Re: air cleaner for a 1969 L72 427
You'll need the flange, too. There are two out there. One with concentric OD and ID with one edge with a flat cut. The other one has a sort of egg shaped OD, and no flat. That's the more correct one.
As for clones, there's a wide difference between Yenko clones out there. Everything from 350's with Yenko stripes, to very accurate replicas. I would not use a clone as a model for building your car. As for your 10 10 car, Jack Douglass Chevy in Chicago made their own "semi-authorized" Yenkos, and used colors outside the 6 Don used. I don't know if they made any black ones, but maybe Steve Bimbi, from Nickey (stefano) could shed some light. He's quite knowledgeable, and very willing to help. |

Unreal,
Is the flange an extension flange? Do you have a picture of it? |

Re: air cleaner for a 1969 L72 427
Here is a picture of an original Camaro flange and lid. Notice no flat cut off side, it is mostly round or oval shaped.
This style flange is now available as a reproduction.

Re: air cleaner for a 1969 L72 427
Here is a Chevelle flange. Notice the flat side with the
sharp cut off. This is what you <u>do not want</u> if you have a Camaro.
