Some oil should do the trick. It's not like it's going to go through another 40 years of daily driver abuse and get the chance to rust again.

L3-12 Gunk/Radiator Specialties. Doesn't burn, doesn't stink. Has kept clean, bare steel parts rust free in my basement for at least the last 15 years. Takes a few days to dry, but doesn't leave a noticable film.
