4 Sp cross member to the subframe
 

I'm in the process of assembling a subframe for 69 Camaro Z28

The bolts that hold the cross member to the subframe - im told the correct bolts have a flanged head and the bolts go up thru the frame with the nuts on top of the subframe. HBC has a set of bolts that im told is incorrect...i don't know?? Also the HBC bolts have only 2 washers for 4 bolts?

Anyone have an orig car where the cross member has been removed and can tell the type of bolts, washers and nuts that are correct and the orientation?

Ed,

I could not get a good picture, I'll try again later. The bolt inserts from the bottom up, non-flanged, 3/8" course thread, has a lock washer and nut on top of X-member. Bolt is about 1" long. I'll try to measure later today.

Yes Ed,

That is what mine look like, non-flanged, grade 5. The bolts on the right side of the car get the flat washer on top of the subframe, then lock washer, then nut.

I stand corrected. The one bolt I photographed has a flange, very thin though. More details later. I have to help Mr. Chevy move.

They do make a aftermarket long bolt kit,if that helps.

Nova and camaro should be the same... The L79 nova had all the original bolts I re-used. I can remove one and take a picture for you tonight. I am almost positive it had a flange. I even think I have some originals from another car if needed.

This is the bolt that was in my nova cross member an A on the top and 1 inch long.

I checked for bolts and I only found 3 and I have 1 that is about a ½’ longer. It could be cut down so you would have 4 PM me if interested in bolts.

there not the ones for the Camaro, the ones that HB City have are a close reproduction

Hello Jason,

There are many one year only bolts on the 1968 Novas. This is one of them. 69-70 were most like the 69 Camaro.

I am always surprised how many little differences there are in 1968's.

Hummmm, logically the flanged head make sense due to the fact it has to be inserted thru the frame, so a socket type tool is necessary to hold the bolt as its inserted into the hole.

HBC bolts, have the one side washer for the slotted holes on the crossmember, but the bolts i believe are not correct if you buy my theory as stated above. WOJ's bolts look to to have the flanged head to me?

Any one from CRG listening?

Ed,

The pix of the bolt Jason posted are the same as the ones installed on my Camaro. Same head markings too.

If Mike did not send you pictures, let me know. Mine are fairly rusty, but the detail can still be seen.

I agree that the flange makes sense due to the location and positioning.

Here are the pictures of Phil's subframe bolts, car has never been messed with. Cleary shows washer head bolts. Second photo shows the use of a flat washer under a split washer. This detail was only use on the r/h 2ea. bolts that are on the side of the crossmember that has the two slotted holes. The reasoning should be obvious. These bolts are not called out in the 69 AIM, most likely the crossmember was already bolted to the frame from the vendor.

Wow from the multiple pm's I have gotten I wish I had several sets. LOL! But I only have 3 bolts and 1 that can be made correct for a full set.. If Eddie don't want them then I will offer them to the first PM I got. AS for a price I have no idea. I was just trying to help a member out.

Very very interesting - thanks mike and Woj for the pics.....need to check AMK to see if they have right head markings....i know they have the correct flanged bolt - need to check the head markings

Based on Phils pic and the number of threads sticki ng up past the nut, with the washer and the lock washer, the bolt length is 1 1/8th with a flanged head.

This would be the case for both sides - length is the same.

I would not be to concerned about the head markings, GM always had multiple hardware vendors. I saw a survivor 69 a few years ago the had three different vendor marks on the four trunk lid bolts.
You say they are about an 1 1/8&quot;, I will look in my extra stuff.
