Default 1969 Boss 429 Mustang on BAT

This is an interesting car. Appears to be a numbers matching car that has been with the current owner for 30+ years. Missing some key components, but still, an original Boss-Nine with the born-with drivetrain doesn't come along every day. Sitting at $68K with one day remaining on the auction. I'll be surprised if it hits the reserve.

This 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 is one of 857 Sportsroof examples produced for the model year. Assigned Kar Kraft number KK1874, the car was built on May 28, 1969 and was reportedly used as a daily driver and family runabout by its original owners until 1973, after which it remained with them in storage. In 1988 it was acquired from the original owners by the seller, who has since preserved it as a non-running project stored in his garage. The car retains its original 429ci V8 as well as its original color combination of Candyapple Red over a Deluxe black vinyl interior. Additional Boss 429-specific equipment includes a close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, a Traction-Lok differential, and competition suspension. Other factory features include power front disc brakes, power steering, a trunk-mounted battery, a shallow front spoiler, thermactor pollution control equipment, and more outlined below. Missing equipment that will need to be acquired to complete the project includes the Holley carburetor, seven-blade engine fan assembly, 3.91:1 rear axle gear set, Autolite Sta-ful heavy-duty battery, Autolite vented battery cap kit, Carter 3-Port smog canister, and Magnum 500 wheels. This Boss 429 is accompanied by a collection of provenance-related documents including the original Ford window sticker and original Eminger-Ford invoices, an Elite Marti Report, original owner’s materials, and a logbook from the first owner. It is now offered in Surrey, British Columbia with a collection of spare parts and British Columbia registration in the seller’s name.

The Boss 429 variant was offered in 1969 and 1970 in order to homologate the 429 engine for use in NASCAR, with final assembly carried out by Kar Kraft Engineering in Brighton, Michigan. This example is finished in its factory shade of Candyapple Red, one of five colors offered on the Boss 429 for the 1969 model year.

Closeups of the finish, trim, and lighting are presented in the photo gallery below, including various dings and other imperfections. Areas of corrosion are noted on the rear panel around the taillights and are also pictured up close in the gallery. The driver’s door is said to have been damaged in 1970 while the car was under original ownership and replaced with a door from a color-matching donor 1969 Mustang. The Special Performance Vehicle data plate was transferred to the replacement door, though the Kar Kraft tag and Boss 429 tire pressure sticker were stored and are included unattached. The factory glass, internal components, and trim were installed on the replacement door, and the removed damaged door is included in the sale.

Bud Moore Racing magnesium wheels were added by the previous owner and measure 15×5.25” up front and 15×8” out back. A page from the original owner’s logbook shown in the gallery below indicates the original Magnum 500 wheels were stolen in 1970. Vintage Goodyear Blue Streak tires remain fitted on the Bud Moore Racing wheels. The Boss 429 model was equipped with unique suspension components, including revised control arms, a higher-rate front anti-roll bar than other Mustang variants, a rear anti-roll bar, and staggered rear shock absorbers. Power-assisted brakes with discs up front and drums out back were standard on the 429, with the front brakes reinforced with heavy-duty hubs and rotors as well as over-sized spindles.

The Deluxe Decor interior features high-backed bucket seats trimmed in black knitted vinyl with color-keyed carpeting and simulated woodgrain appliques on the dash, console, and deluxe door panels. A Rim Blow steering wheel is also featured as standard equipment. Factory seatbelts for four occupants feature shoulder belts for the front seats and retain cloth labels reading “Hamill MFG Co. for Ford” along with date codes, which are shown close up in the gallery below. Additional markings shown in the gallery include date-coded CarLite logos on the windshield, rear glass, and side glass.

Instrumentation includes an 8k-rpm tachometer and a 120-mph speedometer. The five-digit odometer indicates just over 15,000 miles. A rally clock centralized on the passenger side of the dash was part of the Deluxe interior package, while the visibility package added courtesy lights to the glovebox, ashtray, trunk, and other areas. The center console retains a factory shifter, shifter boot, and shift knob, behind which two dash plaques were added by the original owner. Features that were distinct to the Boss 429 model’s version of the Deluxe interior were cable controls for the choke and ram-air, which are held on a steel bracket mounted above the accelerator pedal on the lower dash area.

The 429ci 820-T V8 utilizes cast aluminum dry-deck cylinder heads with partially hemispherical “crescent” combustion chambers as well as a forged-steel, cross-drilled crankshaft and forged aluminum pistons. This example features a solid lifter camshaft and aluminum valve covers, characteristics that were featured on later versions of the 820-T engine. The factory Holley carburetor is missing, as are the seven-blade cooling fan, the Carter 3-Port smog canister, the Autolite Sta-ful heavy-duty battery, and the Autolite vented battery cap kit. The seller notes the car has not been driven or serviced since 1973, and that a thorough inspection is recommended before road use. The body tag has been removed from the front radiator support but is included and pictured in the gallery below, where it is shown from behind for readability. Also viewable in the gallery are engine compartment grease pencil markings and firewall service decals.

A stamping of the VIN derivative on the engine block is shown above and matches the car’s VIN. Special casting code HP 429 is shown on the front driver’s side of the block in the gallery below in addition to the smog pump date code, and the aluminum engine tag is also pictured. Also visible in the gallery is the power steering pump tag displaying a date code and part identification HBA BZ, unique to the Boss 429 model.

A Toploader four-speed manual transmission is retained and features a cast-iron case, close-ratio gear set, 1 3/8″ input shaft, 24″ housing, and 31-spline output shaft. A Traction-Lok limited-slip differential with a high-nodular iron case also remains fitted, though according to the seller the differential gears were changed by the original owner from the factory ratio of 3.91:1 to 3.50:1. The differential tag was reportedly removed in the process. The Boss 429 model also featured a specially-constructed and balanced driveshaft. Additional photographs of the underside of both the body and chassis are provided in the photo gallery below.

The Ford window sticker accompanies the car and lists a total price of $4,924.76. Also included in the sale are an Elite Marti Report and original Ford invoices purchased from Lois Eminger in the 1990s. These invoices show the car being transferred from Ford Motor Company to Shelby c/o Kar Kraft, then from Kar Kraft to Cargill Motors Inc. of Hurricane, West Virginia. Remnants of a dealership emblem from Cargill Motors can been seen on the rear of the car. Also included are the Ford Quality Car Care Temporary Ownership Card, an owner’s manual, a Boss 429 owner’s supplement, a factory brochure, and a factory “Helpful Hints for a Safer Ride” guide.

A collection of factory service and maintenance parts and fasteners is included, with additional parts pictured in the gallery below. Also included are a date-coded jack, handle, and spare mounting hardware, as well as a factory date-coded Space Saver 7.75×14” spare tire and inflation canister. Both sets of original ignition and trunk keys are also supplied. The video attached below features a tour of the engine compartment

Did anyone see what it sold for? I was watching it yesterday with several hours left on the auction, and it was in the 90's. Betting it went for well over $100K if it hit reserve. BAT site is down right now for upgrades, apparently.
