At Flint Assembly (at least on the frame line) the correct repair was to "X" out the offending character and then hand stamp the correct digit or letter in that proximity. No overstamping (and never any grinding).

Usually there was not just one vehicle involved. In the case of getting the VINs out of sequence you would have a number of vehicles stamped wrong before someone would notice, which would require dispatching your repair man (or "Quality Man", the foreman's right hand man) to determine the scope of the issue and work his way back with hammer and punch set in hand, all while the line kept running.
