Default Charger 500 Hemi - Cars Road Test

These were purpose built to provide the Dodge boys and advantage on the NASCAR circuit. Certainly not a glowing review due to cost and styling.... Personally, I love these cars!

At MCACN 2022 the Vintage Certification team has a 69 Charger 500 Hemi with 683 miles. If that isn't enough, it is black with red striping.

The Charger 500 made it's debut at the 1969 Daytona 500. Also debuting in that race was the Ford Talledaga which won the race. After building 392 units, Dodge abandon the 500 for the Charger Daytona. NASCAR never said a word about the missing 108 units needed to officially homologate the car.

The Maroon car above is the 1968 prototype. All 500s were built from 1969 Chargers.

Wasn't the prototype "maroon" car actually red? I think your article photo has been color adjusted because i could swear that actual car was found decades ago and was at the Mopar Nationals in the mid 1980's.
