21 years ago when I bought my old 69 Chevelle convertible, I removed the original spiral shocks and bought some (I believe) Gabriel gas shocks at Pep Boys. They were painted black so were very unassuming under the car. I could easily have painted them grey if I wanted a more 'correct' appearance, but that car was so heavily undercoated that the underside wasn't show-worthy anyway.

For a street car, I would run a modern gas KYB, paint them orange or white and put a vintage Koni or Hurst shock sticker on them

I would like to keep the original spiral look but I'm leaning to the KYB's for a better ride.
if I ever go to a points show I can change them back.

I put KYB's on my Chevelle 35 years ago (can't believe it was that long ago) and have been really happy with them and had no issues. Still rides great. Painted them grey when installed.
