Default Replace Aftermarket PS Steering with Manual

Hi Folks:

I have a power steering aftermarket kit on my 1968 base model standard car. There is no documentation showing that it was ever installed on the car (PS was an option 1968). My question is whether I should pull off the power steering kit and reinstall the original manual steering parts for the car. I plan on showing the car in upcoming judging competitions. Alternatively, I might be able to find and purchase original part to replace the aftermarket ones. I think the only part that is date-coded is the gearbox, but I could be wrong. PS makes the car much easier to drive, but it's not factory correct. Many thanks.

PS - if anyone knows of a reputable shop who repairs manual steering gearboxes, I'd be very appreciative. It's in pretty rough shape.

It sounds like you are going to drive the car some - so I would go with factory PS parts. A date coded PS gearbox should not be hard to find.

Agree, unless you are doing the Camaro Nationals showing the car with the PS might not ever matter.

I'd leave the power steering in it myself. Much nicer to drive with. As a matter of fact, I am currently going away from manual steering in the car I have now and I'm adding factory PS parts to it for better drivability. Of course, I'm keeping all the original stuff aside in case I ever need to convert it back to factory original steering. Easy swap but I much prefer power steering if driving the car.
