SW Pedestal Tach value ????

I have been having a hard time sourcing information on SW gauges.
What would be the going rate for a early chrome Pedestal SW tach based on condition and model?
Sourcing other than ebay?
There seams to be a lot more information on Sun compared to SW.

It all depends on Model you have and does it need a sender to operate. Most of the old ones

do.

They sell the (Can senders) that need battery's to work and you can not get them anymore.

Is the chrome good on the outer ring of that tach and does it have the cup or the mounting

for the column or just the dash,or even if its there at all. Post a picture of it to see the value

more. I have many Sun..S/W tachs..gauges and know people that sell them as well.

Sounds like you're describing a Sun tach, not a SW pedestal tach, as they don't have a separate cup or separate mounting for column or dash... that's why they are called pedestal. Also, their sending units (monitors) do not use batteries of any sort.

A SW Pedestal tach was available in several face configuarations and maximum RPM displays from 6000-10,000. Of course the ones that have the most value are the "Custom Face" IE: Greenline versions with the 8,000 rpm face, as that's the one made famous by Don Yenko. He also used the Standard face version (Black face) and those are desirable too, especially in the most popular 8000 rpm face version.

Prices of course are also dependent on model and condition, as these can get pitted and worn, and are expensive to restore. They also have a slot in the mounting foot to use a hose clamp through it to column mount and these slots are often broken out from ham fisted hot rodders over-tightening them and breaking the potmetal casting of the mounting foot. With that said,a true NOS custom face 8000rpm version in the SW display box can sell for over $1000, with nice used examples selling for around half that. The blackface version is usally considerably less valuable, but no less correct for most cars of the era. Worn examples of either would be worth less obviously, but that should give you an idea. With that said, you might always find one for 20 bucks at your local swap meet.... but you gotta get up early and be willing to dig and scrounge a bit. That's the best way to get a deal on something and by far the most fun by the way!)


To use one, ALL Stewart Warner pedestal tachs require a separate monitor box, and the one you want for a Chevy V8 with standard ignition is a 990B. They are often as hard to find as the tach itself, and can sell for upwards of $350.00 alone for a NOS one in the pretty display box. They use no batteries, and have no wear items inside, so a used one will usually work as well as a NOS one, if not as pretty cosmetically. Those can also be found for considerably less money... just make sure the little sticker or even better, the ink stamp on the bottom says 990B, as the A, D, etc. versions won't work on standard gm ignitions.

I've been collecting these forever, and do way more buying than selling, but hopefully that will help give you an idea.

Well said Joe. The only thing I can add is the 990d will work with points ignition. I
think your valuation is fair if the tach is working. Many are fried internally from being hooked up without the monitor. This is common since the wires coming out of the tach are the common red, black, white, and green found on transistorized tachs that don’t require a sender.

If you are thinking about mounting it with a hose clamp, notice that the base is broken out where the slot for a hose clamp would go. You could still mount it using the screw holes though.

anyone know what tach was used in the Yenko Stinger ?

I think it was a SW tach model that was made to mount in a flat dash panel
