Re: Need help identifing this muncie!
Also, "P" doesn't indicate Pontiac. It indicates a Muncie 4 speed transmission for passenger cars (except the Corvair).

Re: Need help identifing this muncie!
Sorry abut the misinformation on the A B C codes, my over sight. Indeed they were not used until 1969. Use the input shaft for ID 2 groves =M20 1 grove = M21 no grove = M22. Just try to help out . Tony

Re: Need help identifing this muncie!
The P works up to 1967 early 68. Then they changed that to HI (CHEVY) code if it was a special order such as a 396SS they put the P in the third digit "HIP". The case and tail numbers where put together by Pontiac. I have one in my garage. I know it came out of a GTO. Tony

Re: Need help identifing this muncie!
Tony,
I'm not sure where you got your information from, but I don't think it's correct. I've never heard of this and there's nothing in any of my reference material mentioning the "HI" or the "HIP" codes. "Chevy By the Numbers" has no info on these as well. The "P" was used on the Muncie 4 speed (aluminum case) starting in the late 1963 model year (for Corvettes), up through the 1974 model year. Although there are a lot of good WEB sites with Muncie info in them, HERE'S ONE I found doing a quick Google search. Others might chime in with more. You should also pick up a copy of Alan Colvin's books, "Chevy By the Numbers" series. They have a TON of great info in them, and Alan's even a member of the Camaro Research Group. Ed

Re: Need help identifing this muncie!
Yep, he wrote it. This is why this site is so cool. I would have been trying to find a trans. with that code. I got engough of that right now. I rescued a 1968 Chevelle 396SS from a field. Tony

Re: Need help identifing this muncie!
Right now it is all colors, But it looks to me to be some teal blue color with a black stripe. I just got the car a month ago and really just have not gotten that far with it yet. I has no motor, but the 4 speed M21 ( no shifter) and 12 bolt posi are there and both are good. Interior black. Has the gauges & tach instead of the idiot lights. The car came from Texas the frame is solid. It sat in the back woods/field since 1988 I found unused plates in the trunk and the plate # match the tile. But it was a mouse condo. I evicted 10 adults and a couple of nests. Interior all gone. I mean everything. But they left the wiring alone. Tony
