We were told that the height of the rear wing was based on the ability to open the trunk lid all the way. This is only a coincidence and not the truth of the height.

Wind tunnel testing had shown that the rear wing would only be effective if it was in "clean" air. That meant it had to be taller than the roof of the car. How much taller? The wind tunnel showed the optominum height. Which just happened to be where the trunk lid was all the way open.

These wing cars used their enormous rear spoilers and full aero package to slice through the air like a hot knife through butter. With a drag coefficient of around .28, it's more aerodynamic than a modern Mclaren P1.

1964 Pontiac 389 V8 dual groove alternator pulley
