Chevelle gear change.
I'm changing the gears in my Chevelle from 4:10 to 3:31.
Will the 3:31 will be okay with a 4 series carrier? Thanks in advance, John |

Hi,
Great choice in gears but you will need a 3 series carrier. That's how I remember it when I last did a gear swap. Long ago I went from those gears to 4.10s using a 3 series carrier. I could get Richmond gears with the thicker ring gear to compensate. Good luck. Now I want to go back again...... |

You will love the change. When I bought my 69 L78 Chevelle it had 3.31's and when I restored it I went back correct which required 4.10's. Big bummer really.

You can not put a 3.31 on a 4 series differential case. It will not work. The ring gear will be too thick and you will not be able to get it into the housing with the pinion installed.
Do you know how to set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash?
