Tom Akin's 1969 L72 Kingswood "Lead Sled" Speed & Supercar October 1972
Quite possibly the coolest station wagon ever built? Last edited by carnut4life; 08-12-2023 at 07:19 PM. |

Another blast from the past Chad!
In the late 60's the music of solid lifters and lumpy exhaust was a daily occurrence in the service Dept of Schukei Chevrolet, but, from the stock appearing Kingswood wagon that just rolled into John Day's stall?? Say what?? That was the begining of the transformation of the Lead Sled into a race car. There were regular visits to John's stall for tuning and maintenance. After the move to the new dealership building there was open space on the back lot for launch test and tune. Did a bit of that myself actually. I remember the new white '72 Chevelle that followed, a 402 I believe, but I don't believe it was as successful as the Lead Sled. In the early '80's while I was at the other Chevy dealer in town the Sled would stop at the parts dept. entrance occasionally, in street trim but still with the custom paint. I believe it is in a collection in the PNW now. IIRC it was one of two built, the other being in the GM or Chevrolet Heritage collections. - Bill W |
