Default Re: Tim Schuetz;s (NAPA68) not so stock 1967 Nova!

It's been a while since I wrote about this car. Much of what has been posted is since I installed the 422 SBC..............and then I started to chase the car.

If I have driven the car 1000 miles since, that would be about it. Frankly, the car is stupid fast.........fastest car I have ever owned and just about the fastest I have ever driven. Its a great car...............for about 20 minutes. I guess I am getting older and expect a little more from my cars to enjoy them.

So, it's time to revisit the car................again. I'm going to keep the 422, but change the cam. I may go back to a solid flat tappet in lieu of the solid roller. I'm sick of bronze distributor gears plus certainly, there are enough high quality oils on the market to satisfy any lubrication requirements.

We will see what else has to change. Hopefully, I am able to reuse much of what I had (carb, intake, heads, etc.)

I have a few primary goals of what I would like to achieve with Nova 2.0
1. Still pump gas
2. 500hp by 6000 rpm
3. 500 ft. lb. of torque (or more) with a torque peak around 4000 rpm. I would like to see 400 ft. lb. @ 3000 rpm.
4. Any sort of cam burble to be gone by 2000 rpm. I may go back to a 5 speed transmission. I live in the countryside and miss the overdrive. We will have to see there. The M22W and ram rod is a hoot to beat around.
5. If I do keep the M22W and the ram rod, I am going to have to section out the bench seat. The Mrs. would really like to drive the car again, and cannot due to how far back the seat is.
6. If I ever do get this to the track, I'd like to see a low 12 second pass if not high 11.

I like the idea of this car being a bit old school (carbureted SBC). I did consider an LS engine, but I already have a car like that.

Anyways, I started taking it apart today. I have a list of small items I am going to address while the car is apart.

There is some real estate that would have to come out of the seat to better accommodate the shifter

Good to meet you in Chicago, Tim. I loved the '68 Camaro. It was even better in person.

That is a lot of cylinder head to try and tame down, and I would hate to not continue that valvtrain. Not clear on the bronze dizzy gear statement, we're you having problems?

Going back to the 5 speed makes sense, rather than cutting the seat. You can add a Hurst looking shifter and few will notice.

My ego would struggle changing a car you describe so flattering as setting the high water mark for speed in your stable. Wish you all the luck you need on the next phase of the project.HW38E

You are right Paul as far as the heads are concerned. My feeling, given the size of the engine, that should cover a fair amount. I have a cam in mind for this................but we are going back to the engine builder ultimately.

The bronze gear..............cannot get more than a summer out of it with a fair amount of debris in the oil, time to move on.

FWIW, yeah............my ego has a hard time taming this down. Again, the car is stupid fast and draws a crowd damn near every where we go.

The car is just silly fun

Nice to see an update. Love this car!

Low-12s? Geez... That will be no problem at all!!

My '65 Chevy II has a mild 355 (9.6:1 CR, vortec heads, 217 @ .050" cam, performer manifold, q-jet), a M20, and 3.36 gears.

I've had it at the track exactly ONE time with this combination. It was only my second time drag racing with a stick. With a soft launch (bog), and a Terrible 60 ft time (2.0), it ran 12.9x @ 108 mph. No powershifting.

11s should come easy for you!!

Not sure I understand the "lot of head to tame down" comment. It's 422 ci. How does that runner CSA compare to a L72 427 rectangular port head? I'll bet it's still a much smaller port to feed the same size engine. If you cam it right, I don't see why you couldn't have a civil engine with those large ports. If it was a 327, that might be a different story.
