You guys are laughing now, but it wouldn't suprise me one bit to see guys lining up with bags of cash trying to buy whatever they can from guys like Bill Jenkins, including the shop toilet.
There was an auction recently of the famous pinstriper Von Dutch's belongings. Someone paid $310,000 for Dutch's old wooden box of brushes and paints. It's an old trend that has finally found its way into the car world: People who buy someone else's life. I'll bet the guy who bought Dutch's pinstriping box has never lifted a paint brush in his life. Von Dutch had one talent and worked most of his life to eke-out a living at it. Now that he's dead (and can no longer share in the money his posessions and name bring at high-brow auctions), his life is being bought by rich people whose major accomplishment was that they got rich. Again, it's not new. William Randolph Hearst filled Hearst Castle with the antiquities of ancient Europe. Now we're seeing the artifacts of the heroes of the car world (Jenkins, Yunick, Von Dutch, Ed Roth, etc.) being bought by wealthy automotive enthusiasts. I'll bet Von Dutch would have liked to get a piece of that 310K someone paid for his paint box. |
