Car looks correct to me. I have a picture of a '71 400 LS3 engine in front of me....shows the same decal that is on this car's engine. This source goes on to say in this piece that RPO LS3, Turbo Jet 400, a big block that debuted in 1970 as a non SS Chevelle option. Actually displacing the 402, the LS3 was basically a 396 with an enlarged bore and confusing name.

On a separate note.....the '71 and '72 Chevelle SS did not receive external badging unless it had the 454, otherwise, just SS. Also, the LS3 could be ordered on the '71 Chevelle even without the Z15 package. By the way, the Heavy Chevy could be equipped with any V-8 from the 307 to the LS3...the LS5/454 was not available on this model.

Rising tide lifts all boats and I think the '71 Chevelle SS's will appreciate nicely especially the 454's.
