Mercury never "officially" offered the HiPo 289 in it's Comets. Supposedly if you were a good customer of a big LM dealer, you could get the Sales Manager to somehow order you one. Seeing that front plate -
I am often surprised at the cool things the Michigan Secretary of State (our equivalent to the DMV) allows. Same year authentic plates (which are permanent after an initial $35 fee), permanent trailer plates, and cool specialty plates. The latest offering is a throwback to the "Water Winter Wonderland" versions, in blue and yellow like above, issued in 1965 and 1967. They have proven to be wildly popular, even among vehicle owners that do not appear to be car enthusiasts. (Maybe they are water and winter enthusiasts). I ordered one up for my Duramax Pickup, and my brother in law got one for my old red '87. K
