I actually don't mind snakes at all. We mostly have rattlesnakes and bullsnakes in this part of WA state. I have been known to stop my car when there is a snake lying across the road, and grab a stick and pull it off to the side so nobody drives over it. The rattlers and bullsnakes love the warm roads here in the summer, and they are great for mice control.

Reminds me of when I lived in Florida. Being an attorney I have always had a "professional courtesy" relationship with other reptiles so I never had a problem with snakes outside my house, especially the 7 foot long Indigo snake that lived under our chimney. (For those of you that dont know, the Indigo snake is the the largest domestic constrictor (it's non-venomous) in the continental United States. It's also on the endangered species list -they are great to have around because all they eat are poisonous snakes) In 7 years of him living under our chimney we never saw another snake in the yard...and we lived in the boondocks.

Anyway, one day Im sitting on the patio and I hear my 2 year old say "look at the pretty colors" as she is reaching to pick up a four foot long Coral Snake (the most poisonous snake in the continental United States and probably in the top 10 deadliest in the world). Well anyway, at that point professional courtesy goes out the window and I grabbed it by the tail (Crocodile Hunter-style) and tossed it outside the house and womped it to death with a tree limb.

Since childhood I have always remembered the old saying on how to identify the poisonous Coral snake by which colors border which on its back: "Red touch yellow, kill a fellow. Red touch black, good for Jack."

And after that I did give that Indigo snake a good talking to for missing that Coral Snake. I guess he was getting lazy in his old age.

We rarely see snakes here in PA, so when I did see one a year or two ago - I just had to poke it with a stick. Hmm... not my brightest moment, nice Copperhead

Of course you know the joke about the attorney and the snake in the road....
