Rick Smith who is restoring the Motion car saw this and sent me pics of the emblem. It is exactly like the one posted above, except WITHOUT any part numbers on the back. Maybe it was an earlier version? (Or maybe the first one made, for that car, then they made some more and sold them since they had the mold??)

I have two of these emblems, one NOS and one used. Definitely aftermarket and designed to be used on Chevelle and Camaro. It is nothing like a 67 Impala SS427 grille emblem, which has a separate stamped steel mounting bracket riveted to the emblem, which is made of anodized stamped aluminum. The emblem in question is chrome plated die cast. Motion used this emblem on their SS427 Camaros and Chevelles, and several magazine articles show it.

He's a legend here locally, but he also writes a column for the "Smoke Signals" mag (the Pontiac Oakland Club news) so his sphere is expanding.

In 1969 there was a 396 listed for Police cars

I've seen 396 4-door Chevelles - I recall one Fire dept car and some police cars. Pretty sure they were 69's.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that one before.
Interesting. No 4-speeds available on the police cars, and the L48 and L35 come with rear stabilizer bars.
