Looks like nobody has had a punch on the bearing caps yet. Please don't put punch marks on the left bearing cap. The left cap carries most of the load and punch marks make weak areas on the cap.

As much fun as it would be to try them just once, we do intend to make the car driveable. 4.10s are bad enough, 6.14s with 28" tire would be 4400rpm at 60mph. Also, the chipped teeth on the pinion left some chunks of metal floating around inside.

Wow…..6.14 gears!!!! That pinion had to be REALLY small……not too many teeth touching the ring gear. Which can lead to broken teeth very easily.

Awesome project!
Does anyone know if a fiberglass hood like that is available?? |

The hood was from Moroso in the early-70s.
Unlimited Products still sells the scoop, but I'm not sure if anyone sells the hood. |

It will be fun to see if the carrier/pinion gears are still the original or if they were swapped for OTC COPO parts with the gear change.
The posi springs look rather beefy...

You are right Mitch, those are not the original 200 pound green springs. Those are the 800 pound springs used in the heavy duty Eaton and Moroso units. If it has the 16-10 gears then it's a COPO unit. If it has the 17-10 gears then it's a HD Eaton or Moroso. If it has 18 - 10 gears then it's a standard unit that has had the spring pack changed. Those 800 pound springs are a lot of fun to get in there!

We have it home from my buddy's and up on my lift now. He went through the brakes and swapped 4.10s back in it removing the 6.14s. Now I get to work on trying to make it run. We're trying not to disturb or even clean anything that doesn't absolutely need it. Original master cylinder and calipers were rebuilt, but it needed a few brake lines and all of the hoses replaced.
As crusty as the car looks from the outside, it's surprisingly very solid underneath for a a car that sat in the Iowa dirt for 40 years. All of the car's structure is very solid and not even pitted much. The car sitting on a hillside probably saved this, as any moisture would have run off quickly instead of sitting in a damp puddle for decades. VIN stamp on the transmission matches the car, and it even still has the tag attached to the side cover. Things are coming apart but will go back together soon. I'll work on the LT-1 out of the car, and fire it on the run-stand before it goes back in. #7 has some rust on the cylinder wall, so it's going to need at minimum a hone and re-ring. Hopefully I can remove the stuck piston without damaging it. |

Wow, that's cool that it still has the original trans !
Daily dose of PB Blaster in the stuck cylinder and it will, eventually, start moving.
