Usually you can go by the smooth/external or ribbed/internal style casings but always watch for the plug shape as the square plugs were external reg. units and the flat plugs internal type. .
Large case Heavy Duty units may have carried on longer as external type and explain the way the tech info reads, but on standard size casings I remember '72 being the changeover model year as that was the year they made the ribbed style casing in both external and internal regs during the transition...again watch for plug shapes...square plug = external and flat plug = internal type. . I found this below online and it seems to go along exactly w/ what I recall from my days in the trenches. . "...By 1969 GM introduced the 10SI Delcotron with its internal regulator on the Corvette and started offering it as an option on certain models. Within a few years the 10SI was standard equipment on all GM cars and trucks..." ~ Pete ![]()
